Freemagic tape – our newest product, makes it easy to fasten your nappies. Currently available in white, this amazing new product consists of a single tape that has the properties of both hook and loop, in the one tape.
It’s unique construction means that the hook is lower than the loop, preventing the hook picking up lint or damaging the fabric, and thus allowing it to fasten better for longer periods of time.
The tape is super smooth and soft to the touch, as the hooks are hidden below the loops.
You only need one length, and there is no more confusion about sewing the wrong peice of tape onto the wrong part of the nappy! No more buying seperate pieces!

A type with the hooks and loops alternately piled on a same surface, FREEMAGIC™ can generate bi-functional effect of hook and loop with single tape. By the unique construction, higher loop yarn than hook produces soft touch and prevent the garment fabric from damaging or prevent the hook picking up the lint or dust.

Do you know why the two tapes can easily stick by touching and can open by peeling?
If you watch carefully the surface of MAGICTAPE™ or FREEMAGIC™, you may notice the surface of the fastening tape has 2 differently shaped napped fibers of hook and loop shape.
The interlocking of the hook and loop causes the closure.
The fastener types are defined by the shapes or line of hooks and loops. These 2 types of shapes must be used to perform fastening.
One-piece design with loops standing above hooks construction
offers neither scratching to the skin nor snagging the garment yarn,
result in consistent closure power without lint collection.
.

(1) Owing to the elimination of polyurethane resin as back coating, Eco-Friendly MAGIC TAPE realizes a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions throughout its all stages (from production to disposal) when compared to standard products with organic solvent containing back coats.

* Figures calculated by Kuraray and based on a standard 25mm-wide, one-meter long hook-and-loop fastener product unit.

(2) Safe, because it contains none of the following environmentally hazardous substances: Class 1 chemicals specified by the law (toluene, diethylaminoethanol, acrylamide, ethylene imine, etc); RoHS designated substances (cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead ,mercury, brominated flame retardants).

(3) Because the material is polyester, it has excellent water resistance, and will therefore be suitable for outdoor sports apparel applications (decrease to 60% of existing nylon products.)

(4) Because it contains no polyurethane resin, even without fire-retardant treatment it meets railway, automotive, and other flame-resistance specifications.

(5) Because polyurethane resin is not used in the back coating and is made of polyester, it has better chemical and weather resistance and there is no fear of yellowing.

(6) Because it comprises only a single polyester material, recyclability becomes possible.

(7) Because it is lighter, thinner, and softer than previous materials, it will have a broader range of applications.

(8) It is more easily applied than previous materials owing to a better sewn product and adhesive agents.

(9) Allows significant reduction in manufacturing lead-time requirements in comparison with previous manufacturing processes.

It’s that time of year again, when we all start thinking madly about what to do for everyone for Christmas. Really, I should have thought about it all 6 months ago, because if I’d done that, I wouldn’t be stressing now. But there’s nothing quite like having a last minute stress.

There are only 16 days left until the big day. So once I’ve rediscovered where my sewing machine is hiding – I might have all of 1 week to sew up enough goodness to make at least part of this Christmas a hand-made one.

So! What will I sew! Here are a few things I’ve thought of so far.

Firstly, what would Christmas be without decorations? Not much. Certainly very bland! And I like to have a new Christmas decorating theme whenever I can. More often than not, my children do the Christmas tree thing – so it ends up not so much themed as coated. In everything. There are no visible branches at the end of the day.

This leads me to the dinner table. That particular baby is MINE at Christmas time.

This year, I’m going to do placemats that are nice and easy to clean and fit the ‘theme’ for me. I’m going to use the First Spring PUL – I’m sticking with non-traditional colours this year, something a bit more cooling for our unforgiving, non-airconditioned house. Pale blues are perfect!
So placemats from First Spring PUL, edged in the cornflower FOE. A strip of the PUL folded in half and snapped together with a matching single snap makes a perfect table napkin holder. And with the matching cotton knit, I could even possibly stretch to napkins that match too!

Oh, and coasters. PUL coasters.

Am I going too far???

If the deers aren’t your thing (they SO are mine) there’s a bunch of other fabrics that could suit your particular table theme.

Other things that you can also do with PUL for Christmas? Well, if you have a REAL christmas tree, you will know how much mess they can make. Having a christmas tree skirt is a great solution to keeping fallen needles out of your carpet. And using PUL means that if you need to gather it up and shake it off outside, the PUL layer on the back of the fabric slides easily across your flooring without snagging and upending the mess right where you don’t want it to be. And you can throw it in the wash at the end of the season without any troubles – unlike the acyrlic felt ones that are often in shops. Use your snaps to do it up around the back of the tree.

I don’t use wrapping paper. At all. We use christmas bags that I have sewn over the years, and re-use them each year. The kids love leaving the empty bags underneath our tree for Santa to come and fill up too! They’ve really gotten into the spirit of no wrapping paper waste. Using PUL for wrapping bags might seem over the top, but the fabric holds it’s shape really well and stands up too. It makes excellent wine bottle bags – so much nicer than the cardboard ones.

When we go to see the family for christmas, we take our gifts in the bags too. We take them home with us at the end of our visit. And because I’ve sewn up so many different shapes and sizes, there’s always the perfect bag for the perfect gift.

Try making some from PUL and some from the cotton prints we stock. Even knits make great bags.
Do you like bunting? PUL makes fabulous bunting, for a different take on the Christmas room decorations. Instead of tinsel, use different prints of the cotton PUL as simple triangle bunting flags and hang around the room. The PUL backing means the fabric doesn’t have to be doubled over, and will hang perfectly on a peice of bias-binding tape or even FOE if you want to make the sewing even easier. And because PUL doesn’t fray, you don’t even have to hem the flags!

There is an obvious use for nappy fabrics at christmas – and that is, to make nappies as gifts. Or wetbags, swim bags, everything else that can be made. See this blog post to look at other options for using nappy fabrics as presents!

Don’t forget to keep all your scrap pieces. They make excellent bits for the children to chop up and glue onto the front of home-made christmas cards. And onto their hands, the table, and their shoes.

Well, that’s Christmas all stitched up. At least – it will be, once I’ve dug my sewing machine out from under the mounds of fabric that currently cover it.

Wish me luck!

Marnie has made a complete set of items using the Wheels Orange PUL

Here is what Marnie had to say about her creations -

* a baby bib made from the Purl Bee Liberty Bib pattern, PUL on one
side, backed with blue bamboo velour. This is intended for my 6 week
old nephew.
* newborn nappy cover made from my Noonee Naps pattern. This is lined
with blue suedecloth so that a booster can be laid into the cover.
This design is particularly suited for families doing EC as the
booster can be replaced repeatedly unless the cover is soiled.
* a cloth pad using my Noonee Wilga amphora pattern. This pad has the
Orange Wheels PUL on the back, making the pad waterproof. Two layers
of hemp/organic cotton provide absorbency and the top fabric is the
luxuriously soft baby blue bamboo velour again.
* a snack pack – Orange Wheels PUL on the outside of the pack and a
food grade clear lining on the inside (since PUL has not yet, to my
knowledge, been proven safe for use directly against food products.)
The snack pack fastens with cotton ties making it einfinitely
adjustable and suitable for holding sandwiches without them drying out
or moist things without them leaking out into other items in the
lunchbox or bag.

Angela, wow what a great idea! I bet your kds (and husband!) are thrilled with these t-shirts that you made out of the Monkey Scatter Tan PUL.

Elizabeth got crafty and brought us yet another new idea for PUL use. Elizabeth has used the Monkey Stripe Blue PUL.

Here is what Elizabeth had to say about her creation -

This my 4yo Mr T, who loves cooking but not the girly aprons! The cheeky monkeys worked out great for him (hand drafted the pattern myself) and will keep him dry for any spills. He can reverse it to use for an art smock for wipe-clean ease. I have used some of your remnant FOE for the gathered top of his pocket (which usually carries his toy dog) and a bit of Velcro holds the suedecloth straps well, adjustable to any size.
I did have to bribe him to pose with the cupcake!

Another wonderful idea brought to us by Caroline. Caroline use the Tiled Garden PUL.

Here is what Caroline had to say about her creation -

I had so many ideas that i wanted to make but when i received the fabric in the mail I decided a Pencil Roll was perfect for the PUL fabric..

The PUL works so perfectly for a pencil roll, it is more durable than cotton, It is easy to wipe and keep clean, It keeps the pencils relatively waterproof.

I added the features of a lovely hibiscus flower on the inside made from different coloured PUL fabrics and finished with a matching button. And PUL hearts on the outside with matching tie.

In fact the whole Pencil Roll is made from PUL waterproofing fabric except for the buttons.

And yet another different item (you are all so clever!) Emma has created a gorgeous nappy bag using the Tiled Garden PUL

Here is what Emma had to say about her creation -

I have made a nappy bag as my item. I used the PUL as a pocket for two drink bottle holders and as a pocket for nappies. As I am expecting my second child, and I will have a 19mth age gap, I need two sets of nappies so I made a double pockets with the PUL inside the nappy bag. I did this because I got sick of my daughters water bottle leaking or leaving condensation and leaving me with wet nappies that had to be cleaned for no good reason.

Photo 1 – Closed view of the nappy bag. One drink bottle holder with the PUL on each side of the nappy bag (a bigger one for one and a smaller one for my toddler).
Photo 2 – Open view of the bag with drink bottle PUL holder pockets, and front inside pocket (lid of nappy bag folded back).
