Thank you for making your purchase at Nappies Covered. This information sheet is to help you to care for your newly purchased fabrics. Fabrics sold by nappies Covered are not pre-washed unless stated.
Washing is recommended before use
Bamboo Fabrics
- Pre-wash your fabric two - three times on hot and then dry. If you have a tumble dryer, dry it on hot in between washes to ensure maximum shrinkage before you cut and sew. If you do not have a dryer, line drying is fine.
- When laundering your made products they can be washed at any temperature.

- Use half the amount of detergent in your wash. DO NOT use fabric softeners as these will coat the fabric and make them unable to absorb liquid.
All other absorbent fabrics
This includes cotton velour, bamboo velour, microfibre and hemp.
- Pre- wash these fabrics in cold to warm water before use, no fabric softeners should be used.
Care of PUL
PUL (Polyurethane Laminated fabrics)
This is a fabric that has been treated with a coating to make it waterproof. It has a small amount of breathability. This is the fabric that has a shiny side to it. Your fabric will be either a polyester or cotton fabric.
PUL does not need to be pre-washed before sewing.
- DO NOT: (below mentioned points will lessen the life of your nappies).
- Soak your PUL made items in bleach. E.g –napisan, nappy soakers, whiteners.
- Tumble-dry for long periods, short tumble-dries occasionally are fine.
- Use vinegar in washes as it may affect the PUL.
100% polyester microfleece, minky or suedecloth
- Wash fabric before use- will remove any residue/dye that may be left on the fabric during manufacture.
- Do not use fabric softener on these fabrics as this can cause the fabric to repel water.
FOE (Fold Over Elastic)
- Coloured FOE should be washed prior to use.
- Wash items made with FOE in a wash bag to protect it against snagging.
Silk Noil /Raw Silk
- Hand washing is preferable or gentle cycle in a wash bag cold to warm water.
- Mild detergent, using half the amount.
- Do not use fabric softeners.
Oil Cloth
- Wipe clean only, do not machine wash.
Suggested washing of your PUL Nappies
- Scrape any solids into the toilet.
- Dry pail your nappies. This means to place them in a nappy bucket without water
- Nappies, booster’s etc can be washed in a normal cycle in your washing machine. Cold to warm wash is fine, hot washes are not necessary.
- Line drying in the sun will get off any stains that may remain. Line drying will also prolong the lifespan of nappies.
