PUL Q & A

What is PUL?

Polyurethane laminated (PUL) fabric is the term for a thin, waterproof laminate layer that is applied to the back of fabric to make the fabric waterproof.  It is generally heat pressed onto the fabric, creating a long lasting seal, permanately attaching it to the fabric.

The polyurethane laminate was originally created for use on fabrics for within hospitals and other medical situations.  Someone (outside of the hospital situation) stumbled upon it and realised that it's use in nappies would be perfect! ...and thank goodness they did!  Here we are today with so many fabric choices to make up all our own wonderful nappy creations :)

PUL and Breathability

PUL is quite an amazing fabric.  It does have a tiny bit of
breathability and I have found it is fine on baby/toddlers skin.

When compared to the other options - PVC pants or Fluffies , which I found in the past DID make babies skin sweat.

Disposables -  I found bubs skin got get that tacky sort of feeling to it in warmer weather due to sweating .
I think that PUL is great.  I have found that my babies have not sweated at all
but their skin feels nice and comfortable

PUL and Nappy Rash

I have not had any cases of nappy rash since using PUL on my children. I have not had any reports back from customers with rash problems at all.

With most nappies made out of PUL the PUL fabric does not come in contact with bubs skin at all due to the liner/inner fabric used in the nappies

What is the best PUL to buy?

All of Nappies Covered my PUL is Fabrite PUL, which is from the USA.  It is a tried and tested product that has been around for years.  Both the cotton prints and the plain poly's are laminated in Fabrite PUL.

If you are after a fabric that will be soft and always remain soft and also be very hard wearing I would highly consider the plain and print polyester pul fabrics.  I have some of these made up in nappies that are now onto the second child and are over 4.5 years old and they are still going strong.

Cotton print pul, even though gorgeous, does not stay as nice as what the poly prints do.  As they are cotton the print can fade after a year or so, and cotton never dries as soft as what a poly fabic does.

The cotton prints that I have laminated at Fabrite are high quality quilting fabrics, with brand names such as Michael Miller, Moda, Timeless Treasures, Alexander Henry and more.
